Governing Body
Who runs Christ the King? Quite clearly the Principal and the other senior staff. Who owns Christ the King? The Diocese of Southwark owns the land and buildings but the College is a free-standing institution set up by the Catholic Church and responsible for its own affairs. Like all free-standing institutions it has its own government, the Governing Body. The Governing Body is formally incorporated under the Further & Higher Education Act 1992 and the highest level of its constitution is the Instruments and Articles of Government (2009) [PDF, 88.4 KB].
Please note that the Education Funding Agency (EFA) replaced the Young People's Learning Agency (YPLA) as the College's principal funder and regulator on 1 April 2012.
One of the last tasks of the YPLA was to lay modification orders, making changes to the Instrument and Articles of Government for each sixth form college. The orders were a legal necessity to enable colleges to exercise the new powers afforded to them on the commencement of the Education Act 2011, including the power to modify or replace their own Instrument and Articles. In the case of the Catholic sixth form colleges, including CTK, this can be done with the permission of the Diocese.

Any other references on this website to the YPLA, or its predecessor the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), should now refer to the EFA.

Membership
The Church does not give the Governing Body total freedom. It selects the Foundation Governors who are always in a majority, and lays down in its foundation documents what kind of College it is to be to safeguard its Catholicity.
Although CTK is free-standing it has other stakeholders to whom the Governing Body is accountable in varying degrees of formality. Apart from the Church, the most significant of these is the Education Funding Agency (EFA) which channels state funds to the College and monitors performance very closely, issuing detailed reports after formal inspections. The Office for Standards in Education (OfSTED) also monitors and reports on College performance.
Other stakeholders make an impact through representation on the Governing Body - including governors elected by staff, students and parents. The Governing Body appoint members who can express points of view and inform the Governing Body as a whole but they are not delegates. Finally, the Governing Body co-opts a small number of members who bring necessary skills or experience not found in the other members.
The Principal is automatically a member of the Governing Body to whom she is accountable.
The Clerk and other members of the College staff also attend meetings as requested by the Chair of the Governing Body or its Committees.
