Textiles, Fine Art and Graphics trip to the Tate Britain
As part of the A Level Fine Art, Graphic Communication and Textiles Design programme of study upper students went to the Tate Britain to see the Rachel Whiteread exhibition and to experience a workshop with the Artist in Residence.
The forgotten or unseen spaces and discarded objects in Rachel Whiteread’s work demonstrate to students how to connect with the world around them with quiet intelligence.
The Artist in Residence took the students into the gallery to enable them to interact with the art in a conceptual manner. Her theme was “The Body” and the students explored this theme through performance, drawing, conversation and “Memes”.
Our students were engaged and inspired by the Artist in Residences activities and had the great complement of being told they were her favourite visitors, full of “insight and humour”!
The Artist in Residence was so impressed with our students that she has offered to come to the college to offer further workshops to help launch the exam unit. The students benefited enormously form learning in a different and inspiriting environment and from a practicing artist. We were very proud of students conduct and pleased they gained such thought provoking input in order to begin to consider alternative perspectives on their coursework.
