Lord Haskel's Visit to Aquinas
Lord Haskel came to Christ the King: Aquinas and spoke to over 70 students from across our three sites about the work that takes place in the House of Lords followed by a Q+A session. He spoke about his career and how he became a life peer in the House of Lords in October 1993.
Lord Haskel gave students an overview of what occurs on any given day in the House of Lords and that the work done there complements and operates alongside the business of the House of Commons. He informed students that the expertise of its Members and flexibility to scrutinise issues in depth means the Lords makes a significant contribution to Parliament's work. Furthermore, Lords check the work of the Government by questioning and debating decisions made by Ministers and Government Departments.
Lord Haskel encouraged all students to become active in politics. He then answered a variety of questions from our students before staying behind and speaking individually to those who wished to speak to him.
Oluwaseun Onadeko spoke to Lord Haskel after the event and said: “It was really informative to hear first-hand how the House of Lords works and the support it gives to British democracy.”
