BTEC Level 3 Technical Advanced Diploma
What will I study?
The BTEC Technical Advanced Diploma in Art & Design is a two-year course that is equivalent to three A Levels. It is ideal for students with an enquiring mind who have an interest in visual communication and design and established creative and practical skills. Drawing is an essential skill for studying on this course and is integral to all Art & Design practices. You will use drawing to record and analyse the world and you will develop experimental drawings in order to explore ideas visually and to find new ways of expressing your thoughts and feelings. You will experiment with a wide range of tools, materials and techniques in order to extend your practical skills. You will also have the opportunity to study and practice Fine Art, 3D and Textile Design, Graphics and Photography. In order to succeed on this course, you must demonstrate commitment to creative production and study outside of the taught sessions.
In the first year you will develop the knowledge, skills and understanding essential to the creative process within a broad range of Art & Design practices. In the second year you will develop a portfolio of work that reflects your creative direction and personal identity within a specialist area of your choice. An ability to work creatively and constructively with others is essential on this course and you will be given the opportunity to collaborate with other artists, designers and craftspeople from the local community.
What do I need to study this course?
4 GCSEs (Grades 9-4) including an Art-based subject or BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate/Diploma in Art & Design (Merit).
How will I be assessed?
The course consists of thirteen units: five mandatory units and a range of professionally-specific optional units. Units are internally assessed through centre devised projects, assignments and there are four externally examined units.
Where will a BTEC Technical Advanced Diploma in Art & Design lead me?
The BTEC Extended Diploma in Art & Design prepares students for employment and progression to higher study. It is suitable for those who wish to enter the creative industries and those who wish to progress onto Higher Education. The course supports progression into careers in Fine Art, Graphic Communication, Fashion and Textile Design, Animation, Photography and 3D design.
